An Interview With… Just Jasmine Boutique

Just Jasmine Boutique was the winner of our ‘Mother’s Day Gift Competition’ with this fun and novel floral mug cozy!

Handmade floral mug cozy.

It was a really close contest and there were some wonderful entries, any of which I’d have been over the moon to receive for Mother’s Day! Here’s a little more about Just Jasmine Boutique in their winner’s interview feature.

Tell us a little bit about you and your business.

Three years ago I had been left as acting manager in a failing pub. I was six months pregnant when the pub went under and changed hands, so after my son Jasper was born there was no maternity pay and no job to return to. I realised I only had experience in admin and bar work, neither of which I was itching to get back into so I decided to start my own business, I just wasn’t sure what it would be. I had a newborn baby who breastfed constantly, it was a very snowy winter and so I had a lot of time to think while my partner was working shifts.

What made you decide to start Just Jasmine Boutique?

I realised that I had a passion “doing it myself”. I started off thinking I wanted to make jewellery, tried my hand at that and never really felt the passion. Then I rediscovered my love for sewing and started making things for my son which is how my business evolved from jewellery to hand sewn gifts. I even have a DIY website! I will always try to do it myself before spending money.

Where are you based?

I work from my home in Brighton, right next to the sea. It’s lovely!

What made you decide on the name ‘Just Jasmine Boutique’

When I originally intended to make jewellery, the business was to be called Just Jasmine Jewellery, when I realised I wanted to sew it evolved into Just Jasmine Boutique.

What’s your favourite/most popular item that you sell*?

I would say it has to be my handmade bunnies, everyone seems to love them!

Handsewn Bunnies

What are the best things about running your own business?

I make my own hours and can spend a lot of time raising my son. My partner works in the evening so the three of us spend the days together and I sew when Jon is at work and Jasper is asleep. It’s the best of both worlds, doing something I love but spending so much time as a family, I wouldn’t change a thing.

What are the worst?

Motivation! It’s hard to motivate yourself if there is no one to answer to! I’m more easily distracted than I would be if I were in an office. If I have an order to fulfill I am focused and motivated because there is a specific customer who mustn’t be let down, however if I am just creating new things to show on my website I can be slow and put things off until tomorrow.

Any memorable stories from running your own business or clients that have been really happy with their purchase?

Nothing springs to mind, but I have met and got to know a lot of other lovely business Mum’s who sell me fabric etc, and really enjoyed attending craft fairs to meet customers in person. I have had such wonderful feedback about my handmade items, everything about being a business Mum makes me smile!

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

I spend most of my time with my partner and son. I also love looking around the flea market along the road, so many treasures to look at. But I try not to go too often or our house would turn into a flea market, I like everything too much!

What advice would you give to other mums thinking about starting up their own business?

That they definitely should! I can’t recommend doing something you love enough. Even if you don’t make much money to begin with, it’s so rewarding working your own hours, spending time with your children and ENJOYING work. If you think you can afford to live on your partner’s income for a while then just go for it, you will love it.

What plans do you have for Just Jasmine Boutique in the future?

Pirate CushionFor now I like things the way they are, I don’t want a huge business, I want something that brings in some money but leaves me free to raise my son and be a great Mum. Perhaps when Jasper is at school I will think about growing! For now my only plans are to attend craft fairs to sell in person and network.

Where can we find your products?

On my website: and if you follow me on facebook or twitter you will hear of any craft fairs I attend.

What made you decide to enter our competition?

I thought I had a few products that were good for Mother’s Day gifts and decided to just give it a go, I never dreamed I would win though!

How did you feel when you found out you had won?

I felt amazed and excited! I couldn’t believe it checking the scores every day and mostly being in the lead. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for me and offer 10% any product on my website with code THANKYOU at checkout. x
