Tracy Williams (Tracy Williams Studio Photography, www.twsp.co.uk) was the winner of our recent ‘Quintessentially British’ photography competition with this beautiful photograph
Here’s a little more about Tracy in her winner’s interview feature.
Tell us a little bit about you and your business.
I am Tracy Williams a mum of three and I run my own photography business concentrating on weddings and natural light photography – my particular passion!
What made you decide to stat up and how long have you been up and running for?
I have always loved photography since I was a child and my dad gave me my first SLR camera when I was about 13. When we had our first child (now 13!) I wanted to learn all about taking images so signed up for a three year evening class course for a City & Guilds in photography. After I finished I started doing studio sessions for friends and then weddings and finally started the business part time in 2005 round my full time job. Once we had child number three childcare costs meant it was not practical to work in the city any longer and I was able to set up full time (around the children!) in 2011.
Where are you based?
I am based in a small village near Maldon in Essex and travel all over Essex and the surrounding counties for my photography work – so Kent, London, Herts, Suffolk etc.
What types of photography do you do?
I cover weddings and then natural light photography from bump and newborn, children, families and all social occasions. Themed shoots are proving popular and I currently cover enchanted fairy, tea party, Little Madam, Boys Wigwam, Rock the Frock (post wedding!) and engagements with more being added.
Favourite shot is hard!!! However for a personal one it’s this one of our youngest son. Taken in our living room whilst playing so no preparation just a quick snap!
What are the best things about running your own business?
Time management as can work around looking after the children.
What are the worst?
Time management! As it’s always something to work on in any non children time and sometimes not having any adults to talk to. The online photography forums help out there and I have made some great photographer friends who I can chat to and learn from and we support one another.
Any memorable stories from running your own business or clients that have been really happy or unusual requests?
My favourite clients are ones I work with over the years capturing special occasions. I love meeting up again and seeing how the grown and hearing their news. I have just entered my first wedding awards so that’s been exciting!
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
I love my work so even in my down time you will often see a camera in my hand! I like to experiment and try new things and ideas – normally on my family! My ideal is spending time with my family and friends, relaxing and having a laugh.
What advice would you give to other mums thinking about starting up their own business?
Believe in yourself, create a good business plan and find a support network for those days we all have. I also recommend networking meetings – it really helps.
What plans do you have for your business in the future?
To grown my business even more through happy clients word of mouth – the best advertisement.
What made you decide to enter our competition?
Finally felt confident enough in my work to put some forward for judging!
How did you feel when you found out you had won?
I was so very pleased and proud. Thank you so much to everyone who liked my work and voted for me J I really appreciate your support.
