Running a Business Alongside a Career – One Mum’s Story

Me and my son Oscar

My name is Susie Rasul and I live in Stockport with my husband and 1 year old son Oscar. As well as my main job as a mummy to Oscar, I am a Senior Physiotherapist in the NHS. After studying at Leeds Metropolitan University I qualified as a physiotherapist in 2000 and have worked in different hospitals in the North West, Leeds and London and I now work in Altrincham. I have studied to Masters level in Physiotherapy and love my job. After my maternity leave I planned to go back to work 3 days a week.

However, during my maternity leave it gave me time to take stock of my life and I knew I had worked hard at my career and had progressed to senior level, but even working full time I had found that there was always too much of the ‘month’ left when the money ran out. I love working as a physiotherapist but there will always be a ceiling to the amount I can earn. What was becoming apparent was that ‘we’ as a family needed a Plan B. We needed extra income, we needed to really start planning for our future, paying off our mortgage, saving for Oscar’s future and enjoying the things that are yet to come.

I spent my maternity leave considering ways to supplement the family income. After considering many options it seemed that hefty start up costs and the inherent risk of starting a business from scratch was too restrictive. Then Mariella, a good friend of mine contacted me to tell me she had started her own business in network marketing. I didn’t know a thing about it but she sent me along to a meeting locally to hear about the business opportunity. I was really impressed with what I heard that evening and I just had a gut feeling that I needed to do this. I came home and spoke to my husband and then spoke to Mariella’s up line- Louise. She was at the third level of management within the company and had just received a free Mercedes Benz through the company. Louise answered all my questions, and within 3 days I was a fully-fledged entrepreneur!

What I love about this business is that I don’t have to give up anything in my life. I learnt that if I could just fit it around the nooks and crannies of my life I could build a successful business just by talking to people in my network and sharing an opportunity. All I had to do was redirect my monthly spend on skincare, make up, shampoo, conditioner, children’s and men’s products to my own online store, from a company that was committed to providing pure, safe and beneficial, Swiss products, and then teach others to do the same.

What interested me the most was that this was something that could create residual income, so unlike my Physiotherapy job were I had to work an hour to get paid an hour, with my Arbonne business I could make money on hours that didn’t exist, by building a team of people who are doing exactly the same as me. The fact that Arbonne was a 34 year old company and had a very generous compensation plan, just confirmed my decision.

I love the fact that I can work from home and be my own boss. I just share my business with people over coffee, or host business presentations in the evening or weekend. I don’t have to sacrifice my time with Oscar as I can just take him with me. I have also found a range of baby products that are suitable for Oscar’s skin. Since a baby he has suffered with eczema and could never tolerate scented products. We have had every prescription steroid cream and ointment there is. Arbonne products are botanically based, free from any harmful ingredients and the baby products are paediatrician tested. For once I have found a range of products that smell lovey and are safe for his skin and his eczema has cleared.

One of the best things about this business is the people that it attracts; I have met some fantastic people from all walks of life, I have met working mums and housewives as well as dancers, actresses, lawyers, accountants and even Harley Street Doctors. There are also many men who are extremely successful with this business. There is an incredible support system from day one, online training, weekly conference calls, team meetings, business conferences and a multitude of people only a phone call away. I am in business for myself, but definitely not by myself.

The income with Arbonne is all effort based and there are 4 management levels. At the third level you are presented with a Mercedes Benz and can earn an average of £2000-£8000 per month. Like anything in life you get out what you put in and if someone is happy to earn up to an extra £200 per month I can show them how to do that too!

Arbonne allows me to create a much needed supplementary income where I am my own boss and can create my plan B. I love being a Physiotherapist but I also love having my Arbonne business. I can’t wait to continue to build my team and provide not only me, but also my friends with a real opportunity to take control of our lives, work towards securing financial freedom and building a true asset for our future.
