Be Bold! – interior trends for Winter 2014

Article by Karen Spawton- owner of Freya Spawton Furniture Designs

With the summer sun fast becoming a distant memory and the flip flops tossed to the back of the wardrobe for another year, I have the familiar hankering for crackling fires, steaming lattes to warm my cockles and crispy autumn leaves under-foot. Yes, the heady days of summer are great and all but as a typical English rose in the sun I tend to look more beach-burnt than beach-babe!

Along with the yearly, crucial decision of which winter boots to stylishly see me through the oncoming winter onslaught; my mind also shifts to cosy, luxe, welcoming interiors with a swift interior re-style no doubt soon to follow! So, let’s have a look at some of the highlights of Autumn/Winter interiors for 2014/15 and see which you would plump for to warm your cockles!

Geometric TilesWinter blues- banish those winter blues by losing yourself in dreamy, midnight blues and indigo this Autumn/Winter. Use boldly in solid colour or go retro with geometric print. The choice is yours! Blue is often considered a cold colour choice but matched with the right textured accessories you’re onto a winner.

Knitted up- think statement here. . . either go bold or go home! Chunky, oversize cable in foot pouffes, cushions and throws will keep your toes toasty all winter long! I always talk about adding a variety of textures into rooms to create a feeling of warmth and this is the perfect way to do it.

Plump for plush- ‘luxurious’, ‘strokable’. . you get the idea! Luxurious comfort is what this style is all about following on from the Downton frenzy. Luxe fabrics play a huge part in styling this look- satin, mohair, velvet. Everyone deserves a little luxury right?!

Check it out- tartan is big news this season and I for one am pleased to see it’s reappearance in high street interiors. Used in the right way this feature pattern gives a masculine, gentry feel to a room. Combine with shades of black and grey and with natural materials such as timber to really set the tone! You could fully embrace this trend with the bolder than bold tartan ‘Audrey’ wallpaper from Graham & Brown or if that’s a little too ‘out there’ you could just add the occasional tartan accessory to bring your room bang up to date.

Write on trend- with all of our gizmos and gadgets and working from home becoming ever more common place, the desk is making a comeback. With most homeowners becoming more stylish in their furnishing choices the demand for a stylish, practical workspace that has ample storage is in demand! Beureu’s are making a strong comeback and here at Freya Spawton Furniture Designs we can create one to suit your own mood providing a bespoke work area perfect for you. Check out our Luxe ‘Gatsby’ desk, working never used to be this glam!
