More Than Mummies was recently sent some new Chad Valley products from their Play Smart range to review. The products are aimed at children aged 3-8 and are not just fun, they are educational too, the range includes different games and toys to help children develop various skills.
My four year old son and I had great fun playing the games together, and it was wonderful to know that although he was having lots of fun playing these games he was also learning.
The games we got to try…
Alphabet and Numbers Learning Games (Ages 3-6)
This includes an alphabet lotto game, a number domino game and some reward stickers. My son really enjoyed the games, especially the dominoes as they have fun animal characters on them. The lotto game was a good way to help him practice as he learns how to read, it was simple and easy for him to follow and would be good for young children at various stages of their reading
Family Fun Games (Ages 3-8)
This set of games includes a double sided board of traditional games Snakes and Ladders and Ludo, an animal cards snap game, and a shopping lotto game. We tried all the games and our favourite was the animal card snap game! Although all the games seemed to encourage my son to concentrate and teach him to take turns, this was in addition to the games that helped with counting and reading. He was a little bit too young for the shopping lotto game as he needed lots of help to recognise the words on the shopping lists, but in a few months, when his reading skills improve this should be a fun game for us to play together.
Match ‘n’ Learn Jigsaws and Games (Ages 3-6)
These games are easy to play and easy for young children to understand. My son spent quite a while playing with these jigsaws and matching cards on his own. He had a great time making different combinations of people by mixing the mix and match people cards up.
Reading Writing and Spelling Pack
This pack is great for us at the moment as my son is starting to develop his reading and writing. The pack includes wipe-clean alphabet cards, one for each letter of the alphabet which allows the child to practise and erase any mistakes easily. It also includes 50 double sided simple word cards and 12 wipe clean spelling puzzles. Out of all the products this was the one I liked best as a mum! I think it was a great alternative to exercise books that help to practice writing and reading as they were fun and my child didn’t find them boring. A real winner!
Magnetic Play Desk
My four year old son’s personal favourite was the Magnetic Play Desk! He has spent hours playing with this since he received it, he lines all his toys up and pretends they are children and he’s the teacher! A great way for him to use his imagination.
The desk opens up to reveal a double sided board, one side is a black board and the other is a white board. The desk comes with chalk, dry-wipe markers and lots of magnetic numbers and letters which can be stuck to either side of the board. This gives him plenty opportunity to play with letters and numbers and spell out simple words by himself.
The only slight criticism I would have with this product is that the eraser doesn’t work too well at wiping off the marker pen or chalk but this is easily solved with a damp piece of kitchen towel.
With this range Chad Valley provides a great opportunity for children to learn through play, the games are simple and fun and I would definitely consider buying more from the range for my son, or to give as gifts.
Chad Valley toys are available at Argos.
