Hi all,

I'm hoping for some ideas please – I'm at the very early stages of creating my own business making and selling craft kits for children.

I've got as far as listing some on ebay but how do I get people to go and have a look (and hopefully buy one!)?

Anyone know of any other sites I could post on? I am planning on setting up a facebook page and possibly website but I wanted to test the water a bit first to see whether I've got a viable business or not!

Just in case you're interested, here's the link to the ebay listing – http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/chil…..19d2d0d4e0 – any feedback will be welcome!

Thanks for reading, Katie

Hi I took a look at your ebay page. I have an ebay busines as well and the first thing I noticed is your title. It needs to be more descriptive and be loaded with key words. What is in the kit? When sometone is searching ebay they type in what they are looking for and ebay pulls all items containing that key word. So fill your title with as many descriptive key words as you can. Also create a facebook page with your business name. Come up with something creative! Head over to Hike Those Likes on facebook and network like CRAZY! Go to mommy or crat type facebook pages that target your audience and post! I am starting a new business and have been selling via facebook and etsy and it is a slow go not as easy as ebay but networking is very important! I hope this helps.

Hi Katie,

As above you need to work on your listing and make is more descriptive. You also need to get your feedback count up as not many people will buy with confidence from someone with 0 feedback. My suggestion would be to sell as much stuff as you can find that is lying around the house that you dont need. List it all and start the auctions at 99p and see where it goes. You ma

y not make much money but you will get a few feedbacks under your belt.

The other thing you can do is list more items to sell. By just having one item on there you are putting all your eggs in one basket. Have you got anything else to sell? If not you can do the same listing again but this time do it as an auction and start the bidding at £9.99 and see if it sells.

You could also try to spruce up your listing by using a template. You can either pay for someone to make one for you and use your own logo etc but to start with you might be better with a generic free one. You can find some here - http://www.free-ebay-templates.co.uk/

With regards to getting seen on Facebook there are a million and one things you can do to get seen. Have a read of my mini guide as it should give you some good pointers - http://www.thewholesaleforums……ok.139862/

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Vicky :)

Hi Katie,

Great advice from the earlier posts.

I don't know if this will help but we've just posted a little article on a few social media sites you could use to help promote your business http://www.morethanmummies.com…..roduction/

The other thing I would suggest is post a link to your ebay page on your Facebook page (if you have one, if not you may want to consider setting one up) and asking friends etc to share your link. Also keep your page updated with photos of what you have for sale and include a direct link to the ebay listing. Trying to spread the word on your own is really hard work but if you could ask friends to click that share or like button you increase your chances of it being seen by their friends and hopefully lots of other people.

Also post on other Facebook pages, like ours, More Than Mummies and Yummy Mummy Business Mums but also find others that are to do with children's activities or crafts.

Just be patient and once your ebay Feedback rises that will be a positive for your business. When you do start selling item offer great customer services, thank the buyer and let them know when they can expect to receive their order. When you send the order include a business card or compliments slip (can be one you've printed off or even hand written) and include contact details and links to where they can find you, ebay, facebook etc.

This article may help a little too http://www.morethanmummies.com…..-business/ and we are planning some more business promotion article in the not too distant future.

Hi,

Great advice from the other posts – I'm still finding my feet and somewhat clueless as to how to go about things. There are lots of networking pages on Facebook, one of my favourites is The Supermums Craft Fair as it's well used and people are friendly on there.

The MtM articles above are really helpful and I've used quite a few of those to help me along the way!

You can buy children's craft kits from places like Argos and small ones from Poundland/Poundworld, so really think about who your target market is, and if they are going to be buying from ebay.  That said, I love a bargain, so I go in the Poundstores just to see what they have in (it may also be cheaper to buy from there and repackage the contents as that's generally what lets it down) I've had a wooden spoon set with 4 wooden spoons & design outfits & glue, which I couldn't buy the spoons for just £1.

For your ebay listings, if I was buying it, I'd like to see 6 pictures of each of the projects as I'm more visual than verbal.

In terms of just Facebook, I set up a networking page called Those that Craft, with some really basic hints & tips on how to navigate and use the page functions in Facebook, as well as trying to get some information together on other Facebook sellers.  We'd been looking at starter craft kits, including children's ones, so when you're on Facebook, I'm more than happy to do a post and highlight your page and gain you some more likes (it's easier when you reach 40 likes as you start getting insights from Facebook about your page activity) There is also a business opportunity for you to pull starter adult kits together and sell them with a taster sample of a bit of everything in.  Neither myself or the admins on the page can commit to doing it on a regular basis!  Simple things like, a stuffed fabric heart, card craft, wooden blank for painting, make a brooch kit…

Register with HMRC as self employed if you're not already and get your UTR (unique tax reference) so that you are fully compliant with tax requirements as there is a big clampdown currently on online traders.  There are some helpful tools on the HMRC website for creating an income and expenditure account to fill out your self assessment returns (or I'm sure we'll all be in the same position next April to help one another out!)

Thanks, Cath x
