Have just introduced myself in the intro post but to give some background my name is Jenny and I'm currently on maternity leave and have been enjoying a little hobby of making gifts (wooden gifts/plaques and also nappy cakes) so far I have only had the confidence to show family and friends but I'm dreading going back to work (in August) and just wondered if anyone else has been in this position or has felt like this and if you've started your own little business, how did you make that first step?

I have a very supportive husband but I feel I lack confidence and really don't want to start something and tell everyone only for it to be a failure. I also have very little money to invest in my little business idea but do have some bits and bobs left over from makeing things for friends etc to at least start.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Jenny. x

Hiya Jenny,

I've left my intro in the new members bit too if you want a read :0)

I have a couple of crafty ventures going on alongside my main businesses, I make cards and jewellery. I've found the best place for "free advertising" of those businesses is defo facebook and twitter. I know there is an investment in time you need to put into promoting them, but if you are looking to spread the word of your new business, then those are the cheapest way to do it (especially around Christmas time!)

Other than that, i'd suggest booking a stall at the school fete, church fair, fundraising event, ladies night. Take a selection of goods along with you on the night and get yourself some business cards from the likes of vista print, who do free ones and you just need to pay postage. Find some facebook/websites/craft blogs that you can donate a prize to who will in return give you a little exposure for your business.

I'd say just be mindful in the beginning that as you are spending time promoting your business you may need to sacrafice making products – balance it well and you will be ok. Keep your content varied to keep peoples attention, try and come up with a twist for your products that someone who may make/sell similar to you may not have.

Hope that helped a bit, i'm no expert by any means but those are the things i've found useful x

Hi Karen,

I don't know how you find the time to do everything! I'm thinking of starting a Facebook page as I've heard they can be quite popular, I'm also thinking of trying ebay as I've used it before to sell things when I've been having a clearout. The suggestion of Christmas time is great, my local church has a chrsitmas fair where you can have a stalls and it's really popular so may give that one a go even though it's a while off.

Have you (or anyone) ever use etsy or folksy and how do you find it or do the have certain standards? not sure if my crafts are up to it!

Will definitely look into business cards too although could do with thinking of some kind of business name first!

Thank you for your help, Jenny. x

Yep, I have a Folksy store set up which I sell my jewellery from. I found it to be more product defined, because it is only for hand crafted goods. Ebay is too generic for my liking, I would use it to sell off my second had stuff but personally I wouldn't bother with it for my jewellery – not to mention the listing fees!! Folksy is reasonable a i like the fact once i've listed my items, thats them listed for 6 months (or until sold!)

Also, what about going in and asking some independent coffee shops/gift shops/florists if they would carry some of your items? i'm sure most would if you offered on sale or return or for a small % of commission per item sold kind of thing!

Thank you for the advice Karen, I'll avoid ebay and look in to folksy, not sure if I'm quite ready to show my work to local shops but it is a brilliant idea, maybe once I know my stuff is popular enough I'll look into that.

Thanks, Jenny. x
